THE SHAMBLES ADULT WRITING WORKSHOP

Gather around the table to thoroughly discuss, analyze, and critique each writer’s piece, one by one, as it evolves through a revision process.

- What is it?
The Shambles Adult Writing Workshop is one branch of
The Shambles, a Baltimore-based, independent, non-profit writing studio that formed in 2021. The workshop format essentially means a class assembles around a table to thoroughly discuss, analyze, and critique each writer’s piece,
one by one, as it evolves through a revision process.

- Who is it for?
The adult workshops are intended for anyone aged 18 or over who has an interest in sharing their prose (i.e. fiction or non-fiction) in an interactive and constructive workshop format, as well as an interest in reading and critiquing their classmates’
work. A background in creative writing is great, but by no means necessary.  Enthusiasm for the process is the only key.

- How many times and how often does the workshop meet?
Each workshop will meet three times, once every two weeks.

- How big are classes, how long are the classes, and where do they take place?
Class sizes will be no smaller than five, and no larger than eight. Each class will be two hours long, and it will meet at The Ivy Bookshop.

- When do the classes meet?
Options exist for each class to meet during weekday hours, weeknight hours, or weekend hours?

Current options include:

Adult Writers Workshops: Sunday afternoon series (1:00 to 3:00 PM
on September 25th, October 9th, and October 23rd)

Adult Writers Workshops: Tuesday morning series (10:00 AM to 12:00 PM on September 27th, October 11th, and October 25th)

Adult Writers Workshops: Wednesday night series (from 5:00 to 7:00 PM on October 12th, October 26th, November 9th)

- Who teaches the workshop?
The workshop will be taught by Sam Farmer, who founded The Shambles in 2021. Prior to launching his writing studio, Farmer worked as a staff writer at a newspaper and as a freelance journalist, taught high school English in Baltimore County for 12 years, served as an English department chair for eight years, worked for two years at The Kenyon Review Young Writers Summer Workshop in Ohio, and has privately tutored young writers and edited the work of adult writers for much of his career, including published non-fiction, memoir, and fiction.

- What is the price of each three-session workshop?
Each three-session workshop costs 180 dollars. This cost includes two rounds of line editing and thorough personalized feedback, a closely monitored and encouraging workshop experience, and a customized curriculum of optional reading and writing exercises that complements each writer’s original work.
